Recently, a team of psychologists from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst sought to investigate the mental benefits of naptime, particularly among young children. According to a press release, 40 young children were recruited to take part in the study. The kids were shown a grid of images early on in the school day, and were then asked to recall the pictures and their locations. A selection of the children took a nap in the afternoon, while another did not.

On the same day, the scientists reportedly didn't see a difference in the memories of children from both groups. However, kids who took a nap the next day as well did show substantial improvement in their recollection ability.

"When they miss a nap, the child cannot recover this benefit of sleep with their overnight sleep. It seems that there is an additional benefit of having the sleep occur in close proximity to the learning," Dr. Rebecca Spence, a lead author of the study, said of this discovery.
