According to a press release published by ScienceDaily, results from the large-scale PREDIMED study in Spain – which focuses on how the Mediterranean diet may mitigate various health concerns – have revealed that snacking on nuts three times a week could potentially reduce the risk of dying as a result of heart disease or cancer. This benefit was more pronounced among older individuals who regularly ate walnuts.

“Quite how nuts are able to prevent premature mortality is not entirely clear, nor why walnut should be better for you than other nuts,” said study leader Jordi Salas-Salvadó, a professor at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Catalonia.

The potential benefits of walnuts for heart health have already been documented in past research, including a 2011 study from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania which indicated that these nuts, in particular, had more – and better – antioxidants than other varieties, WebMD reports.
