Estrogen

The primary female sex hormone, Estrogen, is instrumental in the regulation and development of women’s reproductive system as well as secondary sex characteristics. The 3 major forms of Estrogen are: Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2) and Estriol (E3) with Estradiol (E2) being the most potent.

What is the function of Estrogen?

As previously mentioned, Estrogen mediates the formation of female secondary sex characteristics. Estrogen also stimulates helps regulate Ovulation, Uterine Growth, increases Vaginal lubrication, reduces bone resorption, decreases LDL (bad cholesterol) while increasing HDL (good cholesterol), causes water retention, and stimulates a woman’s Sex Drive while in the presence of Androgens (Testosterone). Studies have shown that without Estrogen, free Testosterone decreases sexual desire and helps to contribute to the diagnosis of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder.

What about Menopause?

Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 48 to 52 and is caused by a decrease in Ovarian hormone production. The Ovaries are responsible for producing Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone. The cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycle is the hallmark of Menopause but it is often accompanied by the symptoms of: Hot Flashes, Vaginal Dryness, Sleep and Mood Disorders and an increased risk for heart disease.
