Though it may not get the same media attention as diabetes, heart disease and other serious conditions, depression affects millions of Americans, dramatically impairing their quality of life and even their aging longevity. Too often, though, people in Houston who are battling this illness end up suffering in silence. This may, in part, be due to the unfortunate stigma that surrounds this mental health issue, leading those who experience it to view it as a personal shortcoming rather than the disease it truly is.

Even those who do consult a doctor about their depression may be hesitant to pursue certain avenues of treatment, particularly medication. As such, medical researchers have attempted to quantify the potential benefits of alternative therapies to help ease these symptoms.

Recently, researchers from the University of York in Northern England sought to establish how acupuncture and counseling could supplement conventional care methods. They found that both of these treatment options – in conjunction with the help of a physician – may provide some degree of relief.

"Our study is the first to rigorously evaluate the clinical and economic impact of acupuncture and counseling for [depressive] patients in primary care," said lead author Dr Hugh MacPherson in a press release. "We have provided evidence that acupuncture versus usual care and counseling versus usual care are both associated with a significant reduction in symptoms of depression."
