When most people resolve to start eating better and focusing on aging longevity, one of the first things they think of is reducing the amount of fast food in their diets. These meals, while convenient, are typically brimming with sodium and saturated fat, yet the hold that big chains like McDonald's and Burger King have on the general public remains steadfast.

We all know that we should cut down on the fast food we eat, but just how many Big Macs, Whoppers and stuffed-crust pizzas are Americans actually consuming? According to a recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such high-fat offerings accounted for 11 percent of the calories in an average American diet between 2007 and 2010.

These statistics were obtained by conducting a nationwide survey that required participants to provide details about their eating habits – including whether they'd eaten fast food in the last 24 hours.

While this figure does signify a 2 percent drop from a 2006 poll, it is still clear that fast food is a pervasive part of everyday life across the nation. However, the survey-takers noted that there was a notable difference in fast food consumption between young adults and older individuals.

"The good news from this study is that as we get older, perhaps we do get wiser and eat less fast food," study author Cheryl Fryar told the U.S. News and World Report.

Not surprisingly, individuals who reported greater amounts of fast food in their regular diet were more likely to be overweight, which the researchers found "worrisome" due to the health risks associated with obesity.
