If you're a fan of almonds, cashews or any other type of nut, you're in luck. A new observational study has found that people who eat a one-ounce serving of nuts each day show a 20 percent reduced risk of dying from any cause over three decades, compared to individuals who didn't eat the nutrient-rich snacks. The research was conducted over a course of 30 years at the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. All in all, the diet of approximately 119,000 Americans was examined.

The findings from the research were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. During the course of the study, eating nuts of all varieties was linked to a lower risk of death due to cancer, heart disease and respiratory conditions. Overall, subjects who enjoyed the snack tended to be healthier than those who didn't, boasting lower rates of obesity, lower cholesterol and reduced high blood sugar levels.

"This study adds to the research that nuts are part of an overall healthful diet, especially if people are choosing to have nuts instead of chips or candy," Alice Bender, associate director for nutrition programs with the American Institute for Cancer Research, told HealthDay.com."Nuts provide quality protein, fiber, good fats [and] B vitamins," she said. "Nuts are a whole package of health, and they've shown some cancer-protective qualities."
