Many of the lifestyle choices you make impact your overall health. Your choice whether or not to exercise, drink alcohol, use tobacco or follow a regular sleep schedule all influence your well-being throughout your life.
Most importantly, your choice of diet impacts the way you age. Eating unhealthy foods doesn’t just add inches to your waistline – it can consequently subtract years from your life.
On the other hand, if you’re not eating enough, your energy levels will drop and negatively affect your health as well.
How does diet impact the way you age?
We’ve all been there: You’d much rather pass through the drive-thru after a busy day at work because it sounds way better than going home to spend an hour cooking a meal.
But those convenient, processed foods are loaded with hydrogenated oils that promote chronic inflammation, which ultimately accelerates aging, according to lifestyle blog Experience Life.
The unfortunate aging factor is the same for refined sugars – sweeteners can completely shut down the immune system and break down the collagen in your skin.
This can make your complexion less elastic and cause wrinkles to develop faster.
“Following a balanced, wholesome diet is key for healthy aging in men and women.”
Eating an abundance of preservatives and processed foods isn’t the only thing contributing to faster aging.
A study by researchers at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle found that elderly adults tend to eat less as they age, which means they’re not getting enough calcium, iron, zinc, B vitamin, and vitamin E that the body needs to thrive – also referred to as malnutrition.
This can increase one’s risk for developing persistent pain, nausea, liver disease, depression and even certain cancers.
Following a healthy diet
Following a balanced, wholesome diet is key for healthy aging in men and women. Eat Right, an initiative by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, recommends consuming an abundance of nutrient-rich foods to improve energy, boost immunity and promote longevity.
Eat a variety of fresh fruits, colorful vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains to fight illness and age with ease.
Remember: Avoid processed foods that lack nutritional value. Instead, stick to nutritious options that benefit your body.
