Male menopause (aka: man-opause): Is it a myth?

While most people are no doubt familiar with menopause – a condition brought on by the natural fluctuation of female hormones as women age – comparatively little attention is paid to similar changes in men. Some people who have heard of so-called Male menopause (aka: man-opause) may have mistakenly associated it with the infamous mid-life crisis. However, as Huffington Post contributor Lisa Turner points out, men do have their own physical transformations to contend with.

Just as women’s estrogen levels drop over time, so do testosterone amounts in men. This eventual deficiency, known officially as andropause, can cause symptoms like depression, fatigue, weight gain and a diminished sex drive. But, ultimately, this decline can rob you of your lust for life in general.

Turner explains that the concept of a male equivalent of menopause has been met with some skepticism from the medical community. This may be because, compared to menopause, which involves an abrupt drop in estrogen levels, andropause sets in more gradually. In fact, WebMD states that male testosterone starts to decline around age 30.

By way of appeasing any naysayers, Turner argues that testosterone shifts can affect men in different ways.

“Whether andropause is a man’s version of menopause replete with emotional, psychological and spiritual changes, or just a blip on the hormonal screen, may depend on your own circumstances and makeup,” she writes.

Whatever name you use for this occurrence, it is a medical fact that hormone levels decrease with age. So, men who have observed a decline in energy, libido, muscle or a general decrease in their quality of life should consider consulting a specialist about hormone pellet therapy. This treatment may be able to restore some of the youthful vigor that has depleted with age.

The Longevity Centres of America offers hormone replacement for men in Houston, Texas, and Denver, Colorado. The specialists at these facilities can answer any questions you may have about anti-aging hormones.
