Weight training may ward off injury and help you age gracefully

Weight training has been linked to injury prevention, and may promote aging longevity.

Many people encounter some form of mobility restriction as they get older, whether it takes the form of a medical condition like arthritis, or is simply a matter of getting a bit stiffer as time goes on. However, there is no denying that suffering an injury can severely compound these issues, as the healing process often takes longer for middle-aged and older individuals than it does for young people.

One of the first studies on the benefits of weight training was published in 1997, when a group of sports scientists from the University of Florida analyzed the football injuries suffered by students at local high schools. They found that those who were not involved in structured strength-training programs were more likely to suffer serious injuries on the field, according to ScienceDaily.

The American College of Sports Medicine has continued to tout the benefits of weight training.

“Resistance training has […] been suggested to reduce the risk for musculoskeletal injuries, or perhaps reduce the severity of such injury,” an official statement from ACSM states. “The physiological adaptations seen consequent to resistance training on bone, connective tissue and muscle does imply enhanced protection against injury for individuals who participate in such a training program.”
