With the guidance of University of Vienna professor Veronika Somoza, researchers from Technische Universität München (TUM) have reportedly been experimenting with four fats and oils commonly used in cooking. According to ScienceDaily, the scientists asked study participants to consume yogurt that was enhanced with olive oil, lard, rapeseed oil and butterfat daily for three months.
During this time, the researchers found that the yogurt containing olive oil resulted in the greatest feeling of fullness of the four substances tested.
"The olive oil group showed a higher concentration of the satiety hormone serotonin in their blood. Subjectively speaking, these participants also reported that they found the olive oil yogurt very filling," said TUM Professor Peter Schieberl.
Interestingly, the scientists also came to the conclusion that the smell of olive oil could play a substantial role in its satiating effect.
This finding may lead more food manufacturers to utilize olive oil in their low-calorie offerings.
